Nigeria Plans New Oil Licensing Round in 2026

ABUJA — The Federal Government has announced plans to launch a new oil licensing round in 2026, signaling continued efforts to expand investment opportunities in Nigeria’s upstream sector.

The Commission Chief Executive disclosed this at the Commercial Bid Conference for the ongoing Nigeria 2025 Licensing Round, stating that preparations are already underway for the next phase of asset offerings.

“Our acreage administration will continue to be transparent, competitive, data-driven and firmly linked to performance,” he said, adding that regular licensing rounds are essential to sustain exploration and attract investors.

He noted that consistent access to oil blocks would help replenish reserves, boost production and provide investors with a predictable pipeline of opportunities.

The planned 2026 bid round is expected to build on the current exercise, which has attracted strong interest from both local and international companies.

Industry stakeholders say the move reflects a shift toward a more structured and predictable licensing regime, aimed at improving investor confidence and long-term sector growth.

The Commission emphasised that future rounds will maintain transparency and align with global best practices, ensuring fair competition and efficient allocation of resources.

Analysts believe the announcement sends a positive signal to investors seeking stable and recurring entry points into Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
