Nigeria has opened a fresh phase of diplomatic engagement with Lebanon, with Ambassador-designate Segun Ige Wasa presenting his Letters of Credence to Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun.
Wasa formally presented the credentials on Thursday, September 3, 2026, marking the commencement of his diplomatic assignment in Lebanon and signalling Abuja’s intention to deepen cooperation with Beirut.
The development was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
During the ceremony, Wasa conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s greetings and best wishes to Aoun, as well as to the Lebanese government and people.
The Nigerian envoy reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Lebanon, while stressing the need to build on the existing foundation of friendship and cooperation.
Wasa said Nigeria was seeking greater engagement between the two countries for the mutual benefit of their peoples, with stronger people-to-people contacts identified as an important part of that effort.
He also highlighted the importance of exchanges and closer interaction between Nigerians and Lebanese, saying stronger ties among citizens could contribute to mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation.
The ambassador-designate expressed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the Lebanese government to advance bilateral relations and identify new areas of cooperation.
Wasa further pledged to use his diplomatic assignment to promote closer engagement and facilitate initiatives aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
The Federal Government said it remained committed to maintaining active and constructive diplomatic engagement with Lebanon and expanding areas of bilateral cooperation.
It added that Nigeria would continue working with the Lebanese government to consolidate the bonds of friendship between the two countries.
