The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep condolences to Japan following a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan on July 28, 2026, causing casualties and widespread damage.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed Nigeria’s sympathy to the Japanese government and affected families. The statement was signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Thursday.
On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Japan, particularly to families who lost loved ones, those injured, and communities impacted by the disaster.
“The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have received with deep concern the news of the powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture,” the statement said.
Nigeria also commended the swift response of Japanese authorities and emergency services in managing the aftermath of the disaster, noting their professionalism and resilience.
The Federal Government reaffirmed the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Japan, emphasizing solidarity during this difficult period and expressing hope for the swift recovery of the injured and the rebuilding of affected communities in Kumamoto and the wider Kyushu region.
