ABUJA — Nigeria’s Ambassador to Portugal, Erelu Angela Adebayo, has formally presented her Letters of Credence to President António José Seguro, marking the official start of her diplomatic mission in the European country.
The credential ceremony took place on July 27, 2026, at the Belém Palace in Lisbon, according to a statement issued by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The presentation of credentials signifies the formal recognition of Ambassador Adebayo as Nigeria’s representative in Portugal and underscores the longstanding bilateral relations between both countries.
During an audience with the Portuguese president, Adebayo conveyed the greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Portugal across key sectors.
“Nigeria remains committed to deepening bilateral relations with Portugal, particularly in trade and investment, maritime security, energy, agriculture, education, tourism and cultural exchange,” she said.
She also emphasised Nigeria’s focus on economic diplomacy and collaboration on global priorities, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action and the Africa–European Union partnership.
In his remarks, President Seguro welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria, describing the country as a strategic partner in Africa.
“Portugal recognises Nigeria’s important role in Africa and values its partnership in advancing Africa–Europe cooperation,” he said.
The ambassador expressed readiness to work closely with the Portuguese government, the diplomatic community and the Nigerian diaspora to strengthen relations and expand mutually beneficial partnerships.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the development reflects both countries’ commitment to reinforcing diplomatic engagement and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.
