Nigeria Gas Output Hits 7.93bcf/d as Domestic Supply Rises to 2.18bcf/d

Nigeria’s daily gas production rose to 7.93 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in May 2026, with increased supply to the domestic market reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen local energy availability.

Latest data shows a 0.63% year-on-year increase from the 7.88bcf/d recorded in May 2025, indicating steady growth in the country’s gas sector.

A breakdown of the figures reveals that Associated Gas (AG) contributed 3.96bcf/d, while Non-Associated Gas (NAG) slightly surpassed it at 3.98bcf/d, highlighting the growing role of dedicated gas production projects in Nigeria’s energy mix.

On a month-on-month basis, production dipped marginally by 0.12% from 7.94bcf/d recorded in April 2026.

Despite the slight decline, production has followed a generally upward trend in 2026, rising from 7.80bcf/d in January to 7.81bcf/d in February, 7.85bcf/d in March, and peaking at 7.94bcf/d in April.

In terms of utilisation, export volumes dropped significantly from 4.13bcf/d to 3.07bcf/d, accounting for about 40% of total output.

Conversely, domestic gas sales increased from 2.03bcf/d to 2.18bcf/d, representing 26.6% of total utilisation, a development linked to efforts to boost local consumption across power generation, industrial use, and gas-based manufacturing.

Further analysis shows that 2.11bcf/d, or 26.5% of total production, was used internally for operational purposes, while 0.57bcf/d, equivalent to 6.9%, was flared.

The flaring figure reflects ongoing commitments to reduce emissions as Nigeria works towards ending routine gas flaring by 2030.

Year-to-date figures remain stable, with average production at 7.87bcf/d, rising from 7.82bcf/d recorded in the first quarter and reaching 7.94bcf/d across April and May.

Industry observers say the increase in domestic gas supply signals progress under Nigeria’s national gas expansion strategy, with further growth expected as infrastructure and demand continue to improve.
