No Time To Rest! Wike Gives Contractors January Deadline, Says ‘Don’t Betray Public Trust’

…Insists Tinubu’s Govt Must Keep Delivering Projects

Federal Capital Territory (FCT)  Barr. Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday declared that there would be no room for complacency after the recent commissioning of major projects in Abuja, warning contractors to deliver all ongoing projects on schedule or risk disappointing residents who have placed their confidence in the administration.

Speaking after inspecting the Apo-Karshi and Bwari-Kubwa road projects, Wike said the infrastructure drive of President Bola Tinubu’s administration was far from over, stressing that work would continue until the President’s first tenure expires on May 29, 2027.

He said the administration remained committed to fulfilling every promise made to residents, insisting that public confidence must never be taken for granted.

“Has the tenure of Mr. President ended? Certainly not. His first tenure has not ended. It will end on May 29, 2027. If that is the case, it means the work has also not ended,” Wike said.

The minister admitted that many expected the government to slow down after weeks of project commissioning and flag-offs but insisted that governance demands continuous delivery.

“We made promises to the people during the commissioning and flag-off ceremonies that certain key projects would be completed before the end of the year. We cannot afford to disappoint them,” he said.

Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the long-delayed Apo-Karshi Road, describing the project as one that had become a major concern after being awarded in 2010 and abandoned for years.

He attributed the progress recorded on the project to the support of President Tinubu and commended SCC Nigeria Limited for the quality of work being executed.

“My happiness today is that the Apo-Karshi Road, which has been a major concern, is progressing very well. Streetlights are already being installed. I commend the contractor for the good job and also thank the host communities for their cooperation,” he said.

At the Bwari-Kubwa Road project site, Wike directed the contractor to maintain the agreed completion timeline, warning against any attempt to delay delivery.

“I told the contractor during the Dei-Dei project commissioning that this road would be commissioned before the end of the year. I don’t want anybody shifting the goalposts. They have remained committed, and I believe they will hand over the project as scheduled,” he stated.

The minister assured the contractor that the FCT Administration would continue to provide the necessary funding to ensure uninterrupted work before the end of the dry season.

He disclosed that inspections of other projects recently flagged off would continue, adding that about eight to ten strategic projects were expected to be completed before January.

“When people have confidence in you, don’t allow that confidence to erode. They have seen promise made and promise fulfilled, and we must sustain that confidence. About eight to ten projects must be completed before January, and we are determined to deliver,” Wike said.

The minister also reacted to complaints about illegal street racing on some newly completed roads in the Federal Capital Territory, saying such activities would not be tolerated because they endanger innocent residents.

According to him, while motorists may be attracted by the smooth roads, public safety must come first.

“If they want to engage in car racing, there are designated places for that, not within residential areas. Their rights have limitations, and life is more important,” he warned.

He directed the relevant traffic authorities to take immediate steps to curb illegal street racing and ensure the safety of residents across the territory.
