Senator Adams Oshiomhole has accused former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of misrepresenting his role in the 2015 presidential election that brought the late Muhammadu Buhari to power.
Oshiomhole made the remarks during an appearance on The Mic On Podcast, where he reacted to recent comments credited to Amaechi about his involvement in Buhari’s electoral victory.
According to Oshiomhole, it is incorrect for Amaechi to claim he single-handedly made Buhari president, stating that such an assertion does not reflect the realities of the 2015 election process.
He further alleged that Amaechi did not vote in the election, claiming the former Rivers State governor had directed his supporters in Rivers State to boycott the polls due to the political tensions at the time, particularly his rivalry with then-governor Nyesom Wike.
Oshiomhole noted that while Amaechi served as Director-General of Buhari’s presidential campaign, that role alone does not amount to being responsible for the electoral outcome.
“Amaechi recently lied that he made Buhari president. He did not even vote in 2015 as he directed Rivers people to boycott the polls,” Oshiomhole said.
The comments come in response to Amaechi’s recent interview in which he reportedly claimed to have played a central role in Buhari’s 2015 victory, while also suggesting that President Bola Tinubu’s contributions to the campaign have been overstated.
Amaechi had stated that he led nationwide mobilisation efforts as campaign director-general but was unable to publicly challenge competing narratives at the time due to his position as a serving minister.
The political exchange has revived discussions around the internal dynamics of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 elections and the contributions of key figures in the party’s rise to power.
The 2015 Rivers State elections remain one of the most disputed in Nigeria’s recent political history, marked by intense rivalry between APC and PDP supporters, alongside reports of violence and voter suppression allegations.
Observers note that the latest exchange reflects ongoing tensions among political actors who played major roles in Nigeria’s 2015 power shift, as realignments continue ahead of future electoral cycles.
As of the time of reporting, Rotimi Amaechi has not issued a response to Oshiomhole’s latest comments.:
The development adds to growing political disagreements among former allies, further highlighting fractures within Nigeria’s evolving opposition and ruling party history.
