The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has commended the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for its updated mini-grid regulations and draft net-billing framework aimed at expanding renewable energy access across the country.
The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by a REAN delegation led by its President, Ayo Ademilua, to NERC in Abuja on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
REAN described the new Mini-Grid Regulations 2026 and net-billing initiative as key policy interventions that will drive investment and accelerate renewable energy deployment in Nigeria.
A major highlight of the updated framework is the increase of the mini-grid development threshold to 5 megawatts and above, a move stakeholders say will encourage larger-scale renewable energy projects and improve investor confidence.
The association also praised NERC for what it described as transparency and efficiency in processing mini-grid permit applications, noting that the improvements have made it easier for developers to operate within the regulatory space.
In response, NERC Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, Dr. Fouad Animashaun, clarified that the Commission’s role is to create an enabling regulatory environment rather than directly executing projects.
He stressed that NERC remains committed to supporting private sector participation in expanding electricity access and strengthening the renewable energy ecosystem.
The regulator assured REAN of continued collaboration, particularly in capacity building and stakeholder engagement to accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s clean energy sector.
