Reps Order Probe Of Itakpe-Warri Crash, Demand Compensation For Victims

The House of Representatives has ordered a full-scale investigation into the tragic train accident on the Itakpe-Warri rail corridor, directing the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to uncover the causes of the crash and take urgent steps to prevent a repeat.

Lawmakers also demanded adequate compensation for passengers and other victims affected by the accident, which reportedly claimed lives and left several others injured.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency of Delta State, Rep. Francis Waive, during plenary on Tuesday.

Moving the motion, Waive expressed concern over the accident which occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, along one of Nigeria’s most strategic railway corridors.

According to him, preliminary reports indicated that at least four people lost their lives while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“At least, four persons lost their lives while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Waive told the House.

The lawmaker described the Itakpe-Warri rail line as a vital transportation link connecting Delta, Edo and Kogi states and serving thousands of passengers, traders and businesses daily.

He noted that since commercial operations began on the standard-gauge corridor in 2020, it has become a preferred alternative to road travel for many Nigerians due to its affordability and relative convenience.

However, Waive said the latest accident had raised fresh concerns about safety standards, maintenance culture and operational procedures within the nation’s railway system.

“The accident has heightened concerns about passenger safety, operational standards, maintenance practices and emergency preparedness within the country’s railway system,” he said.

He further lamented that beyond the fatalities and injuries, many passengers suffered financial losses, emotional trauma and disruptions to their personal and business activities.

“Many passengers suffered financial losses, emotional trauma, disruption to business and personal engagements, as well as damage to their belongings.

“The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and reliability of rail transportation in the country and underscores the need for urgent remedial measures to prevent a recurrence,” he added.

The House commended the Delta State Government, emergency response agencies, healthcare workers, security personnel and local residents for their swift intervention after the accident.

Lawmakers noted that the prompt rescue efforts and medical assistance helped reduce the impact of the tragedy and provided support for victims and their families.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation to carry out a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the accident and make its findings public.

The lawmakers also urged the corporation to adequately compensate passengers who suffered injuries, losses and psychological trauma as a result of the incident.

To ensure compliance, the House mandated its Committee on Land Transport and Committee on Legislative Compliance to monitor implementation and report back within four weeks.

The latest move comes amid growing concerns over safety within Nigeria’s railway sector as the Federal Government continues to invest heavily in rail infrastructure to modernise transportation and reduce pressure on the nation’s highways.

In recent years, rail transport has become increasingly popular among Nigerians due to insecurity on major roads and the rising cost of air travel, making safety and efficient operations even more critical.

Lawmakers stressed that a transparent investigation into the Itakpe-Warri train accident would not only establish accountability but also restore public confidence in the country’s expanding railway network.
