The Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for its swift response to operational challenges, describing it as a model for improving performance across the electricity sector.
Speaking at his inaugural meeting with Chief Executive Officers of agencies and parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Power in Abuja on Tuesday, Tegbe cited a recent incident where TCN restored power within 12 hours after a feeder outage.
“TCN, I am happy with you… I gave a directive that it should be fixed within 12 hours, and by 5:20 p.m., I received confirmation that it had been restored,” the minister said, noting that the development was promptly reported to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said the quick intervention demonstrated the impact of commitment, coordination, and effective communication among sector operators.
While commending TCN, the minister called for stronger collaboration across the power value chain, stressing that no single agency can resolve the sector’s challenges alone.
Tegbe emphasised that governance and coordination issues remain major constraints, urging stakeholders to work as a unified team to achieve the Federal Government’s objectives of improved electricity supply.
He outlined key priorities for the sector, including boosting generation, strengthening transmission capacity, improving liquidity, and increasing investment in renewable energy.
The minister also revealed plans to introduce a performance-based incentive framework to reward efficiency and innovation, while assuring stakeholders of transparency and continuous engagement.
The meeting brought together heads of key agencies, including TCN, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), and others.
