SDP Celebrates Freedom of Abducted Oyo Pupils, Pays Tribute to Fallen Army Hero

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has applauded the Nigerian security forces for the successful rescue of 44 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, while mourning the death of a young Army officer who lost his life during the operation.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party described the rescue as a testament to the professionalism, courage and coordinated efforts of the military and other security agencies.

The victims had spent more than 56 days in captivity after they were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Esiele, and LA Primary School, Ogbomosho, all in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The SDP said the month-long intelligence-led joint operation that secured the victims’ freedom demonstrated what could be achieved when security agencies worked with unity of purpose and unwavering commitment.

While celebrating the reunion of the rescued pupils and teachers with their families, the party paid glowing tribute to Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, the 28-year-old Army officer who was killed during the rescue mission.

According to the party, the late officer paid the supreme price in the line of duty and should be remembered as one of Nigeria’s heroes.

“The party salutes the courage and sacrifice of the fallen officer in restoring joy to the traumatised families and for giving up his life to make the Nigerian society better. His death and other heroes like him will forever be remembered,” the statement said.

The SDP, however, described the abduction as a painful reminder of the country’s security challenges and the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.

It argued that the successful rescue reinforced its belief that Nigeria’s problems could be overcome through responsible leadership, sound policies and effective deployment of national resources.

The opposition party also urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts to tackle poverty, hunger and social injustice, which it identified as major drivers of insecurity across the country.

The SDP expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges and that democracy would deliver tangible benefits through improved safety of lives and property, human security and sustainable national development.
