ABUJA — The Senate on Tuesday directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to investigate the recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State, and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator Diket Plang and supported by Senators Simon Lalong and Pam Dachungyang during plenary.
The motion, titled “Urgent need to upscale security operations in Kanam and Jos North Local Government Areas of Plateau State,” highlighted the resurgence of violence in the state.
Lawmakers condemned the March 2026 attack in Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North, where gunmen reportedly killed scores of residents.
The Senate also resolved to dispatch a high-powered delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to the affected communities to commiserate with victims and residents.
In addition, the upper chamber urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to mobilise its agencies to provide relief materials to those affected by the attacks.
A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the victims.
Leading debate on the motion, Plang lamented that Plateau, once regarded as a hub of peace and tourism, has witnessed recurring violence over the years.
He said recent attacks in Kanam and Jos North appeared coordinated and targeted at defenceless civilians, raising concerns about worsening insecurity in the state.
According to him, the crisis has taken on complex ethnic and religious dimensions, with the latest incidents bearing the hallmarks of terrorism.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau put the motion to a voice vote, with lawmakers unanimously adopting its prayers.
The Senate stressed the need for urgent and decisive action to restore peace and security in Plateau State.
