Abuja — A fire outbreak at Hearing Room 107 in the Senate Wing of the National Assembly Complex was swiftly contained on Wednesday, preventing what could have escalated into a major incident.
The fire reportedly started shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports indicate that the blaze originated from the kitchen compartment of the hearing room, with initial findings suggesting a microwave appliance may have been left switched on.
Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who reportedly took immediate steps to control the situation before firefighters fully took over containment efforts. Security personnel and emergency responders were also quickly deployed to the scene.
The Federal Fire Service confirmed that the fire was brought under control within minutes, preventing it from spreading to adjoining offices within the legislative complex.
No casualties were recorded, and there was no significant structural damage reported. Lawmakers and staff who were present during the incident were safely evacuated as a precaution.
Normal legislative activities resumed shortly after the situation was stabilized.
Authorities are expected to carry out a formal investigation into the exact cause of the incident and review safety protocols within the complex.
