South Africa Rally to 1-1 Draw with Czechia to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

ABUJA — South Africa scored in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw against Czechia on Thursday, keeping their World Cup qualification hopes alive in Group A.

Czechia took control early in the match, dominating possession and pressing high to disrupt South Africa’s build-up play. Their approach paid off midway through the first half when they opened the scoring with a move that exposed gaps in the South African defence.

South Africa responded by tightening their midfield and improving their organisation, gradually growing into the contest before the break.

The turnaround came after halftime as South Africa increased pressure and forced Czechia deeper into their half. The equaliser followed a sustained attacking spell, shifting momentum in favour of the African side.

Both teams created chances late in the game, with South Africa coming closest to a winner through a counterattack that required a save from the Czech goalkeeper. Czechia also threatened from set pieces but could not restore their lead.

South Africa’s coach said the team showed resilience in the comeback.

“We showed great character to come back into the game. This is the kind of spirit we need going forward,” he said.

The result leaves South Africa in contention in Group A ahead of the final round of fixtures.
