TCN Declares Force Majeure as Flood Hits Lagos Substations

Lagos, Nigeria — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a force majeure on two major Lagos transmission substations following severe flooding caused by persistent rainfall, disrupting power supply in affected areas.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN.

According to the company, the affected facilities are the Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV transmission substations, both of which experienced significant water ingress after heavy downpours overwhelmed drainage systems.

While the Lekki substation remains operational, with engineers actively pumping out water to sustain operations, the Oworonshoki substation has been forced offline.

TCN said two critical transformers at the Oworonshoki facility—TR1 (60MVA) and TR3 (30MVA)—tripped on no load and could not be restored, as floodwater submerged all associated protection and control cables.

“Our engineers are doing everything possible to evacuate the flood to enable them test the transformers for restoration,” the company stated.

The agency expressed regret over the disruption to electricity supply, particularly to customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) served by the affected substation.

The incident comes amid recurring flooding in Lagos during the rainy season, which has continued to pose risks to critical infrastructure, including power installations in areas such as Oworonshoki and Lekki.

TCN noted that ongoing rainfall has slowed drainage and recovery efforts, making it difficult to provide a definite timeline for full restoration of the affected facilities.

Residents and businesses in impacted areas may experience power outages as restoration work continues, with the company assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to restore normal electricity supply as soon as weather conditions improve.
