Tinubu Commissions Red Cross HQ, Pledges Support

Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned the newly constructed headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) in Abuja, pledging continued support for humanitarian services across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tinubu described the ultra-modern facility as a major step toward strengthening emergency response coordination, disaster management, and institutional capacity within the organisation.

“The activities of the Nigerian Red Cross Society go beyond our shores… the society has remained steadfast in its mission of serving humanity,” she said, commending the resilience and dedication of its volunteers and staff.

The event attracted global humanitarian partners, including representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), British Red Cross, Norwegian Red Cross, and the World Food Programme (WFP), underscoring the organisation’s international relevance.

Tinubu, who also serves as Grand Matron of the NRCS, reaffirmed her commitment to advancing humanitarian initiatives and community welfare.

The new headquarters is expected to enhance data-driven emergency response, strengthen disaster preparedness systems, and improve collaboration among local and international humanitarian partners.

Speaking on behalf of the international movement, IFRC Head of Delegation, Ghullam Awam, noted that Nigeria faces complex humanitarian challenges but expressed confidence in improved outcomes through stronger partnerships.

“Today Nigeria faces complex humanitarian challenges… efforts are ongoing to strengthen disaster response and make communities more resilient to the impact of climate change,” he said.

National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, described Tinubu’s support as a significant boost to the organisation’s mission.

“With her support, I see the Nigerian Red Cross remaining steadfast in its goal of alleviating human suffering and serving humanity,” he said.

Established in 1960, the Nigerian Red Cross Society remains a key humanitarian organisation, supporting disaster response, emergency healthcare services, and community resilience programmes across the country.
