Tinubu Opens Abuja CNG Hub, Tells Investors To Cash In On Nigeria’s Gas Boom

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday commissioned a major Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Daughter Booster Station in Jahi, Abuja, urging investors to take advantage of the enormous opportunities in Nigeria’s expanding gas economy.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the facility as a critical milestone in the Federal Government’s drive towards cleaner, cheaper and sustainable energy for Nigerians.

He said the project aligns with the administration’s Decade of Gas Initiative and the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at boosting industrialisation, energy security and economic diversification through gas development.

“This facility marks another important milestone in our collective drive to deepen gas utilisation, expand access to cleaner energy solutions, and strengthen Nigeria’s gas value chain,” the minister stated.

The Jahi station, developed by Rolling Energy Limited in partnership with the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), is among four gas infrastructure projects being unveiled across the country.

Ekpo said the development reflects growing private sector confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and the Federal Government’s commitment to increasing domestic gas utilisation.

He noted that with over 215 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, Nigeria must focus more on deploying gas resources for local economic growth instead of depending largely on exports.

According to him, the facility will support the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, which seeks to accelerate the use of CNG as a cheaper and cleaner alternative for transportation and industrial activities.

The minister added that increased investments in gas infrastructure would create jobs, reduce transportation costs, cut harmful emissions and improve energy affordability nationwide.

Chairman of Rolling Energy Limited, Mubarak Umar Dambata, described the project as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s energy future and the country’s transition to cleaner fuel alternatives.

He disclosed that the Jahi station forms part of a wider rollout of gas infrastructure projects across Northern Nigeria, including CNG mother stations, daughter stations and Liquefied Natural Gas facilities planned for Abuja, Kaduna, Kano and Borno states.

Dambata further revealed that the company, in collaboration with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, has supported the conversion of over 8,000 vehicles to gas-powered systems.

He said the facility had already begun witnessing massive patronage since commercial operations started, serving between 350 and 400 vehicles daily.

According to him, the station has a sales capacity of 1,000 Standard Cubic Metres per hour and is supported by two CNG tube skids with a combined capacity of 17,000 SCM.

The facility also houses a Mass Conversion Centre capable of converting up to 20 vehicles and 25 tricycles daily using trained technicians and certified conversion kits.

Officials disclosed that the station is expected to serve more than 1,000 CNG vehicles and about 100 trucks daily within Abuja and neighbouring communities.

Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, Ismahil Ahmed, said the project demonstrates the Tinubu administration’s commitment to replacing costly fuel dependence with cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Ahmed described the removal of fuel subsidy as a difficult but necessary decision that opened the door for alternative energy solutions such as CNG.

He urged investors to key into the rapidly growing gas market, noting that demand for CNG infrastructure and services would continue to rise nationwide.

Also speaking, Presidential Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, said the Federal Government had commissioned 25 projects nationwide to mark the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, with many focused on clean energy and gas infrastructure.

Representatives of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the MDGIF also pledged continued support for projects aimed at deepening gas penetration and improving energy access across the country.
