President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 reward promise to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, with players beginning to receive payments of about ₦140 million each in naira equivalent, according to the National Sports Commission.
The reward fulfils a pledge Tinubu made after the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco in the final of the 2025 WAFCON in July, completing a remarkable comeback to secure another continental crown.
Nigeria had fallen two goals behind before producing a spirited second-half performance to beat Morocco and retain their position as the most successful team in the history of the women’s tournament.
The National Sports Commission said the players had begun receiving the payments, valued at approximately ₦140 million per player.
Ajibade welcomes presidential reward
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude to Tinubu for fulfilling the promise, describing the payment as welcome recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.
The commission said the reward reflected the importance of recognising sporting excellence and providing incentives for Nigerian athletes to pursue success on the international stage.
It also commended the President for supporting the national teams and said the fulfilment of the pledge could strengthen confidence among athletes and sports administrators.
Tinubu also rewarded D’Tigress
The Super Falcons’ payment follows a similar reward for members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
D’Tigress secured a fifth consecutive continental title at the competition, after which Tinubu also promised and delivered $100,000 rewards to the players, according to the commission.
The commission said the rewards demonstrated the importance of recognising athletes’ achievements and encouraging a culture of reward, accountability and national pride.
Nigeria’s 2025 WAFCON victory extended the Super Falcons’ record as the competition’s most successful team, taking their total number of continental titles to 10.
