The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed a disruption in power supply at the Apo Substation in Abuja following a fault on one of its 100MVA transformers, prompting a temporary redistribution of electricity through alternative feeders.
The incident occurred at about 12:56 a.m. on May 23, 2026, when a 100MVA 132/33kV transformer tripped on differential relay indication while on no load.
In a statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN disclosed that initial inspection revealed oil spillage around the transformer, while further investigations identified faults in the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings.
According to the statement, repair work is ongoing, with the red phase bushing already restored while efforts continue to fix the yellow phase.
“Following the incident, TCN has requested the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to take supply for customers on the affected 33kV feeders from other TCN feeders within its franchise area, pending the completion of repairs,” the statement said.
The development has led to capacity constraints at the Apo Substation, affecting electricity distribution to customers connected to the impacted feeders.
TCN assured that its engineers are working to restore the transformer as quickly as possible and minimise disruption to power supply.
The company also apologised to AEDC and affected electricity consumers for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
