USA Beat Australia 2-0 to Reach World Cup Round of 32 With Game to Spare

Seattle, June 19, 2026 — Co-hosts United States have secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after defeating Australia 2-0 in their Group D clash.

The victory, powered by an early own goal from Cameron Burgess and a first-half strike by Alex Freeman, ensured the USA recorded back-to-back wins at a World Cup for the first time since 1930.

Despite the absence of star forward Christian Pulisic due to injury, Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered a dominant performance, pressing aggressively and controlling large spells of the game.

USA took the lead in the 11th minute when Burgess turned Folarin Balogun’s low cross into his own net. The hosts doubled their advantage just before halftime as Freeman headed home from close range following a deflected effort by Sergino Dest.

Pochettino praised his team’s display, saying, “I think it was a fantastic game, a very good first half. I think we dominated the game… if we want to win the competition, we need the whole team.”

Australia coach Tony Popovic admitted his side struggled to cope with the hosts’ intensity. “They were quicker, they were more powerful, they won every duel… and we conceded two soft goals,” he said.

USA forward Folarin Balogun, who was named Player of the Match, highlighted the team’s strong start as key to the victory. “We wanted to start fast… and it made the game so much easier,” he said.

The result leaves the United States top of Group D with six points from two matches, guaranteeing progression to the knockout stage, while Australia face a must-win situation in their final group game.
