Boston, June 19, 2026 — Morocco moved to the Second place in Group C at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a 1-0 victory over Scotland, sealed by Ismael Saibari’s record-breaking early goal.
Saibari struck in just the second minute, finishing clinically after latching onto a precise pass from Brahim Diaz. The goal is the fastest scored so far at the 2026 tournament and Morocco’s quickest ever at a FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions maintained control for much of the contest at Boston Stadium, creating several chances to extend their lead. Saibari came close to a second after the break, rattling the crossbar with a deflected effort, while Bilal El Khannouss was denied at close range by Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Scotland responded strongly in the closing stages, with John McGinn, Ben Doak and Scott McTominay leading a late surge in search of an equaliser. However, Morocco’s defence held firm to secure a crucial three points.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou praised his team’s composure against a resilient opponent. “We played a very good game against a strong opponent… we had patience and created chances,” he said.
Scotland coach Steve Clarke expressed disappointment despite his side’s effort. “We dug in and got ourselves back into the game… but we’re all devastated we didn’t get the result,” he said.
The result leaves Morocco on four points from two matches, level with Brazil but behind on goal difference, while Scotland remain on three points heading into their final group fixture.
Saibari’s performance also saw him named Player of the Match, becoming only the second African player to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances.
