Yusuf’s Health Reforms Gather Steam as Kano Deploys Hospital Supervision Teams

The healthcare reform agenda of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has received a fresh push as the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) inaugurated two high-powered supervisory teams to monitor secondary health facilities across the state.

The initiative, approved by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery, and ensure higher standards in public hospitals under the state’s health system.

According to a statement by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the supervisory teams will carry out routine monitoring, evaluation and supportive supervision of all secondary healthcare facilities under the Board’s jurisdiction.

The statement explained that the exercise is aimed at reinforcing accountability, promoting excellence in healthcare delivery, ensuring compliance with professional standards, and accelerating reforms in the sector.

Under the new structure, Team A will be chaired by Dr. Nagoda and comprise senior management staff alongside representatives of professional health bodies, while Team B will be led by the Director of Medical Services with membership drawn from nurses, pharmacists, doctors and other health stakeholders.

The teams are expected to assess service delivery, monitor staff attendance and discipline, inspect medical equipment and infrastructure, and ensure the availability and proper use of essential drugs and laboratory consumables across hospitals.

They will also evaluate patient care standards, monitor sanitation in general hospitals, identify operational challenges, engage health workers on improvement strategies, and submit detailed reports with actionable recommendations after each inspection.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Nagoda said the initiative underscores the Board’s commitment to institutionalising continuous quality improvement in Kano’s healthcare system.

“Effective supervision remains a key pillar for achieving excellence in healthcare delivery,” he said, adding that the Board would continue to deploy every available mechanism to ensure that government investments translate into better services for citizens.

He reaffirmed the Board’s support for Governor Yusuf’s vision of building a more resilient, accessible and efficient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of Kano residents.

The move is expected to further consolidate ongoing reforms in the state’s health sector and improve public confidence in government-owned medical facilities.
