The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has debunked reports claiming he promised automatic return tickets to senators who lost their party primaries, describing the story as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President said he neither made such a promise nor authorized anyone to speak on his behalf in that regard.
Eyiboh stressed that the viral report “does not reflect the position of the President of the Senate,” urging the public to disregard it in its entirety.
According to the statement, what Senator Akpabio actually said during interactions with his colleagues was an expression of sympathy for lawmakers affected by the outcomes of their party primaries.
He reportedly noted that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was already addressing issues arising from the primaries, adding that the final list of candidates would be released in due course in line with party rules and electoral guidelines.
“Senator Akpabio remains committed to party discipline, due process and the internal mechanisms of the APC for resolving disputes,” Eyiboh stated.
The statement further clarified that the Senate President would not interfere with the autonomous processes of political parties or make commitments outside the scope of his constitutional role as head of the upper legislative chamber.
On reports suggesting a planned Senate probe of the military over recent security challenges, the statement noted that while the National Assembly retains its oversight powers, timing and national interest must guide its exercise.
It warned that a public investigation of the Armed Forces at a time when troops are engaged in counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations could undermine morale and operational efficiency.
“The Senate President believes strongly in support, collaboration and discreet engagements with security agencies rather than actions that may distract the military from its duties,” the statement added.
Akpabio also urged journalists and members of the public to verify information from his office before publication, cautioning against sensational reports capable of misrepresenting his statements and actions.
He reaffirmed his commitment to responsible leadership, party unity and national security, stressing that his priority remains the stability and progress of the country.
