The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to party unity, internal reforms and grassroots mobilisation aimed at expanding its electoral fortunes across the country.
The resolutions were reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, where leaders resolved to strengthen party structures from the polling unit level and deepen internal democracy.
Speaking at the meeting, the National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, described the gathering as a landmark in the party’s rebuilding process, noting that within four months, the SDP had successfully held two NEC meetings, organised its National Convention in Bauchi, produced Prince Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate, conducted governorship and legislative primaries, and repositioned its structures nationwide.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its professionalism and constructive engagement with the party.
Gombe maintained that the SDP remains united and has no faction, insisting that disciplinary actions against some former officials were carried out in line with the party’s constitution after due process.
“The SDP has no faction. We remain united and committed to the rule of law and democratic principles,” he said.
The National Chairman urged members to sustain the current momentum, expressing confidence that the party would make significant gains in the 2027 elections.
Presenting the party’s first quarterly report, National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, said the period between March and July witnessed major reforms, including the review of state structures, membership verification, constitutional amendments and improvements in internal administration.
He disclosed that the party had sanitised its membership register with stronger security measures to prevent unauthorised alterations and would now focus on strengthening polling unit structures and training party agents ahead of future elections.
Speaking on behalf of the southern leadership, Vice National Chairman (South), Senator Ugochukwu Uba, urged members to remain united and committed to the party’s vision, saying the SDP’s manifesto places the welfare and security of Nigerians at the centre of governance.
Also speaking, Hon. Solomon Akwashiki expressed optimism that the party would increase its representation at all levels of government in 2027.
Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum, Femi Olaniyi, charged party leaders to strengthen structures across the states, local governments and wards, while intensifying voter registration, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection and membership drives.
In her vote of thanks, National Woman Leader, Saadatu, called for greater participation of women in the party’s leadership, saying increased female representation would strengthen the SDP ahead of the next general elections.
