New ECOWAS Headquarters Symbolises West Africa’s Unity, Diplomatic Progress-Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has described the newly completed China-assisted Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Headquarters in Abuja as a symbol of regional solidarity, diplomacy and collective progress in West Africa.

Wike stated this during the official handover ceremony of the edifice in Abuja on Tuesday, noting that the project represents more than the completion of a physical structure.

Represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the minister said the headquarters embodies a shared commitment by West African nations to strengthen regional institutions and deepen cooperation.

According to him, the project reflects “a vision of partnership, unity, and the collective resolve of West Africa to build enduring institutions that would shape its future.”

He commended the Government of the People’s Republic of China for what he termed its significant contribution to regional integration, describing the project as a demonstration of the enduring relevance of diplomacy and international cooperation.

“This magnificent edifice is not just about concrete, steel, and glass. It is a bold statement that cooperation still matters and that diplomacy can deliver tangible and meaningful outcomes,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed Abuja’s strategic role as Nigeria’s diplomatic capital, adding that the presence of the ECOWAS Headquarters further strengthens the city’s position as a centre for regional dialogue and African development.

He also disclosed that the FCT Administration facilitated the successful completion of the project through approvals, coordination, security support and infrastructure provision.

“Great institutions deserve worthy homes,” Wike stated, while stressing that ECOWAS remains one of the strongest expressions of West Africa’s shared identity and aspirations.

He urged member states and stakeholders within the sub-region to sustain collaboration and remain committed to strengthening institutions capable of advancing regional integration, peace and development.
