Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, will proceed on his annual leave from August 10 to September 11, 2026, with Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal taking over the reins of government in an acting capacity.
The Oyo State House of Assembly approved the governor’s request during Thursday’s plenary after considering a formal letter notifying lawmakers of his planned vacation, in compliance with constitutional provisions.
Reading the governor’s letter, Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, said Makinde would resume official duties on September 14, 2026.
The lawmakers unanimously endorsed the request and confirmed that Lawal would oversee the day-to-day administration of the state throughout the governor’s absence to ensure uninterrupted governance.
The Assembly expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to steer the affairs of the state, noting his experience in previous acting capacities.
“The House is confident in the seamless continuity of governance in the state under the deputy governor,” the lawmakers stated in their resolution.
Speaking after the approval, Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing leave, while reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with the executive for the benefit of the people of Oyo State.
He described the state’s governance structure as stable and capable of sustaining policy implementation without disruption.
The lawmakers also commended Governor Makinde for adhering to the Constitution by formally notifying the Assembly before proceeding on leave, describing the action as a demonstration of respect for the rule of law and democratic governance.
The House thereafter directed that its resolution be transmitted to the executive arm for necessary action.
