Nigeria, US Review Counterterrorism Cooperation in Washington

Nigeria and the United States have opened a new round of high-level security talks in Washington, D.C., with both countries reviewing progress in counterterrorism cooperation and mapping out the next phase of bilateral security collaboration.

The Nigerian delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, while the delegation is led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. The United States delegation is led by Allison Hooker, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

The development was disclosed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said the meeting is focused on evaluating progress in bilateral counterterrorism efforts and charting the next phase of security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

The Washington meeting is the second edition of the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group, following the inaugural session held in Abuja in January 2026.

The January meeting formed part of broader efforts by both countries to strengthen cooperation on security and intelligence sharing, including the protection of vulnerable communities at risk of religiously motivated violence and other areas of mutual interest.

The latest discussions are expected to focus on a range of security priorities, including intelligence gathering and coordination, counterterrorism, terror financing, border security and the protection of vulnerable populations.

The two sides are also reviewing plans concerning the return and enhanced protection of internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as measures aimed at holding perpetrators of violence accountable.

Another area under consideration is stronger border control to stem the movement of illicit goods, resources and people, reflecting the transnational nature of many of the security challenges confronting both countries.

The talks will also include a strategic review of the Defense Roadmap, providing an opportunity for Nigeria and the United States to assess existing security commitments and identify areas requiring greater cooperation.

The involvement of senior officials from Nigeria’s foreign affairs and national security establishments underscores the importance attached to the discussions as both countries seek to strengthen coordination against terrorism and other security threats.

For Nigeria, the engagement provides an opportunity to deepen intelligence cooperation, strengthen counterterrorism capabilities and address security challenges affecting vulnerable communities and displaced populations.

For the United States, the partnership with Nigeria remains an important channel for cooperation on regional security, intelligence coordination, border management and efforts to disrupt terrorist financing.

The Washington meeting therefore builds on the commitments reached during the January 2026 Abuja session, with both countries now reviewing progress and considering practical steps for the next phase of their security relationship.
