China will provide RMB200 million in grant assistance to Nigeria to support the implementation of development projects agreed upon by the two governments, as Beijing moves to deepen its strategic partnership with Abuja.
The commitment was announced on August 13, 2026, when Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, met with the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Dunoma Umar Ahmed, in Abuja.
The grant is intended to further support Nigeria’s national development and economic growth, according to details of the meeting.
Ambassador Yu said China-Nigeria relations had remained at the forefront of China-Africa relations over the past 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
He said the relationship had entered a new phase of high-quality development under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the ambassador, China and Nigeria have maintained close communication and coordination while working to implement common understandings reached by the two heads of state and outcomes of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
Yu said the two countries were also working to ensure that cooperation produces greater benefits for their populations.
“China will provide RMB 200 million in grant assistance to Nigeria for the implementation of projects agreed upon by the two governments,” the ambassador said.
The announcement represents a fresh financial commitment from China towards Nigeria’s development priorities, although the specific projects to be funded by the grant were not identified in the information released on the meeting.
Responding, Ahmed thanked China for what he described as concrete support for Nigeria’s economic and social development.
The Permanent Secretary said the grant demonstrated China’s commitment as a major country and reflected the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and China.
He assured that Nigeria would make effective use of the assistance and work with China to implement the common understandings reached by both governments on bilateral cooperation.
Ahmed said the two countries would continue efforts to strengthen Nigeria-China friendship and ensure that the partnership delivers greater benefits to their peoples.
The grant comes against the backdrop of more than five decades of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China and the two countries’ efforts to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Both sides have continued to emphasise the importance of high-level engagement and implementation of agreements reached under the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the FOCAC framework.
