Nigeria Congratulates Gabon on Independence, Hails Strong African Ties

ABUJA — Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Gabon on the country’s Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation with the Central African nation.

Nigeria also recognised Gabon as an important partner in Central Africa and highlighted opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade, energy, environmental protection, maritime affairs, education and cultural exchange.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the message in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Monday, August 17, 2026, on behalf of the Federal Government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

The ministry said Nigeria joined Gabon in celebrating its history, national identity and achievements since independence in 1960, while expressing appreciation for the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

According to the statement, Nigeria and Gabon share ties founded on “mutual respect, African solidarity” and a common commitment to regional peace, stability and sustainable development.

Nigeria also commended Gabon’s contributions to environmental conservation, regional security, economic development and the promotion of peace and stability in Central Africa.

Nigeria, Gabon share common interests

The Federal Government said the two countries have common interests in addressing challenges including climate change, energy security, biodiversity conservation, economic diversification and sustainable development.

It said greater cooperation in these areas could further strengthen the relationship between Abuja and Libreville and contribute to broader African development objectives.

Nigeria also expressed its readiness to expand bilateral cooperation with Gabon in trade, energy, environmental protection, maritime cooperation, education and cultural exchange.

The government further encouraged greater collaboration between public and private institutions in both countries, saying such engagement would help strengthen existing bonds of friendship and create opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.

Focus on stronger bilateral cooperation

As Gabon marks its independence anniversary, Nigeria said it looks forward to further strengthening the cordial relationship between both countries.

The Federal Government reiterated its best wishes for Gabon’s continued peace, prosperity and sustainable development.

Nigeria and Gabon have maintained diplomatic relations anchored on shared African interests, with both countries participating in efforts aimed at advancing regional cooperation and continental integration.
