The Federal Government has launched the Early-Stage Mineral Exploration and Research Grant Endowment (EMERGE) programme to fast-track mineral exploration, strengthen research and drive local processing of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reposition the mining sector as a major contributor to economic growth, job creation and industrial development.
Speaking at the unveiling, Alake said EMERGE would focus on mineral exploration, critical minerals development and research aimed at unlocking the full potential of the nation’s vast mineral wealth.
According to him, the programme is designed to generate credible geological data, attract investments and position Nigeria to take advantage of opportunities arising from the global energy transition.
“We are moving away from the era where Nigeria exports raw minerals without adding value. The focus now is on local processing, refining and beneficiation that will create jobs and grow the economy,” Alake said.
The minister explained that grants under the programme would support exploration activities, critical minerals projects and research in tertiary institutions, particularly in geosciences and mineral processing.
He noted that strengthening geological knowledge and promoting innovation would help Nigeria compete effectively in the global minerals market.
Alake also revealed that the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF) had already facilitated major investments in the sector, including a 1.5 million metric tonnes-per-annum aluminium refinery project.
He assured stakeholders that beneficiaries of the EMERGE programme would emerge through a transparent and merit-based process.
“Applications will be independently assessed by experts to ensure fairness, transparency and value for money,” he stated.
Earlier, Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund, Fatima Shinkafi, described EMERGE as a game-changing initiative that would deepen reforms in the mining sector and attract fresh investments.
She said the programme would empower indigenous miners, improve geological data generation and strengthen local value addition across the mining value chain.
According to her, the initiative is strategically designed to position Nigeria as a leading destination for critical minerals needed for the global energy transition.
“EMERGE is about creating opportunities, supporting innovation and building a globally competitive mining industry that benefits Nigerians,” Shinkafi said.
She expressed optimism that the programme would stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities and accelerate the diversification of the nation’s economy. Put
Stakeholders from the mining industry, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the National Assembly and other key institutions attended the launch, which is expected to open a new chapter in Nigeria’s quest to unlock the full potential of its solid minerals sector.
