Abuja — A woman who went viral after accusing the Nigerian Army of demanding ₦2 million before releasing the corpse of her late brother for burial has deleted the video and publicly apologised to the military.
The lady, whose identity is being withheld, had claimed in a widely circulated video that officials of the Nigerian Army refused to release her brother’s body unless the family paid the sum of ₦2 million. The allegation sparked public outrage and heavy criticism of the military on social media.
However, in a new development, the woman has deleted the original video and issued an apology, admitting that her claims were false.
In her apology statement, she expressed regret for the defamatory video, clarifying that the Nigerian Army did not demand any money from the family before releasing the corpse. She attributed her earlier action to emotional distress following the loss of her brother.
The Nigerian Army is yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of the time of filing this report.
This incident highlights the growing concern over the rapid spread of unverified allegations on social media, especially those involving security agencies, and the potential damage such claims can cause to institutional reputation before facts are established.
Members of the public have urged citizens to verify information before sharing sensitive content, especially matters involving grief and national institutions.
