Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should have personally led the response delegation.
Speaking in an interview, Obi expressed concern over what he described as inadequate commitment to securing the release of the victims, warning that the situation reflects a troubling trend in Nigeria’s security management.
“President should have led the delegation to Oyo. I don’t think the Nigerian government is showing enough commitment to the rescue of the kidnapped Oyo school children and teachers, and it is very worrisome,” he said.
The former presidential candidate compared the current situation with previous administrations, noting that school abductions have increased over time.
“Under former President Jonathan, there was one kidnap and the whole world reacted. Under former President Buhari, in eight years, there were 10 school abductions. Under the present government, in three years, it has already surpassed,” Obi stated.
His remarks come amid growing public anxiety over recurring attacks on schools and the safety of students and teachers, with the latest incident in Oyo State reigniting concerns about the country’s security architecture.
As of the time of filing this report, the abducted students and teachers remain in captivity, while security agencies continue search and rescue operations.
The development has intensified national debate over the effectiveness of current strategies to combat kidnapping, banditry, and insecurity, particularly within educational institutions.
