Deregistration of 5 parties threatens 2027 polls, democracy — Action Alliance warns INEC

Abuja, Nigeria — The Action Alliance (AA) has kicked against a court judgment ordering the deregistration of five political parties, warning that the move could undermine Nigeria’s multiparty democracy and disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the party’s National Chairman, Kenneth Udeze, said the decision raises serious concerns about democratic inclusion and the stability of the electoral process, especially as political parties are already mobilising ahead of the 2027 polls.

While affirming respect for the judiciary, the AA questioned the timing of the ruling, noting that there is a subsisting Court of Appeal order staying proceedings in the matter.

The party argued that reducing the number of political parties at this stage could limit voter choice and weaken democratic competition.

“Democracy requires options. Nigerians deserve more platforms to express their aspirations, not fewer,” the statement read.

According to the AA, deregistration during an active election cycle could disenfranchise members and undo years of political organisation, while also heightening political tension.

The party maintained that issues relating to party compliance and electoral reforms should be handled through due process rather than actions capable of disrupting ongoing preparations for the 2027 elections.

It urged the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider or suspend the implementation of the judgment until after the elections, to safeguard electoral stability.

The AA also called on the National Assembly to review laws governing party deregistration to prevent what it described as “mid-cycle disruptions” to Nigeria’s democracy.

It expressed solidarity with the affected parties, urging civil society groups and Nigerians to defend the country’s multiparty system.

“A healthy democracy cannot be built on exclusion,” the party added.
