Asaba, Delta State — Asaba is set to enter a new phase in tourism, environmental advocacy and cultural diplomacy as the Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre (NJICC) is formally inaugurated on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
The facility, located within the Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort at the Asaba International Airport complex, is designed to serve as a hub for conferences, cultural exhibitions, environmental dialogue and corporate events, attracting stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond.
The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 12 noon, will be attended by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN); and the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, is also expected.
According to organisers, the NJICC features a modern auditorium, exhibition gallery, library and museum, combining contemporary architecture with African cultural heritage.
Highlights of the event include the unveiling of the Ado Bayero Gallery by the Emir of Kano and the commissioning of the main hall by the Asagba of Asaba. Guests will also witness the premiere of a documentary on environmentalist and explorer, Dr. Newton Jibunoh, alongside art exhibitions, auctions, mural unveilings, book presentations, spoken word performances and cultural displays.
Speaking ahead of the inauguration, Dr. Jibunoh described the centre as a symbol of Africa’s capacity to preserve its heritage while driving development.
“The Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre is more than a building. It is a statement that Africa can lead and that our heritage deserves a world-class home,” he said.
Named after the renowned environmental advocate and founder of FADE Africa, Dr. Jibunoh is widely recognised for his decades-long campaign against desertification and environmental degradation. He has represented Nigeria at global climate forums in Bangkok, Copenhagen and Cancun, and authored several books on environment and leadership.
Organisers said the choice of June 17 for the inauguration aligns with the United Nations World Desertification and Drought Day, with this year’s theme, “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore,” reflecting Dr. Jibunoh’s lifelong environmental advocacy.
The NJICC is envisioned as a centre for environmental policy discussions, research, education and artistic expression, aimed at promoting sustainable development across Nigeria and Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort, where the facility is located, was founded by Dr. Jibunoh and named in honour of former South African President Nelson Mandela, and has grown into a notable tourism and cultural destination in Delta State.
