Asaba gets major tourism boost as Newton Jibunoh Convention Centre opens June 17

ASABA, Nigeria — Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort is set to inaugurate the Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre (NJICC) on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, marking a major step in positioning Asaba as a hub for conferences, cultural exhibitions, and environmental dialogue.

Located within the Asaba International Airport complex, the facility is designed to attract policymakers, academics, environmental advocates, business leaders, and cultural stakeholders from within Nigeria and beyond. The opening ceremony, scheduled for 12 noon, is expected to be attended by Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge; and the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, alongside other dignitaries.

The convention centre features a modern auditorium, documentary and exhibition gallery, library, and museum, combining contemporary design with African cultural elements. Organisers say the facility is built to serve as a platform for high-level engagements, research, and artistic expression.

Highlights of the inauguration will include the unveiling of the Ado Bayero Gallery, the commissioning of the main hall, and the premiere of a documentary on the life and work of Dr. Newton Jibunoh. Other activities lined up include an art auction, mural unveiling, book presentations, spoken word performances, and cultural displays.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dr. Jibunoh described the centre as a symbol of Africa’s capacity to preserve its heritage while advancing innovation and development, particularly in environmental advocacy and cultural promotion.

The facility is named after Dr. Jibunoh, an environmentalist and explorer known for his campaigns against desertification and his contributions to the arts. He is also the founder of FADE Africa and the DIDI Museum, Nigeria’s first privately owned museum, and has represented Nigeria at international climate conferences.

Organisers noted that the inauguration coincides with the United Nations’ World Desertification and Drought Day, aligning with global efforts to combat environmental degradation. The event will also feature a review of one of Jibunoh’s books documenting his Sahara Desert expeditions.

The NJICC is expected to serve as a centre for environmental advocacy, policy discussions, education, and tourism, contributing to sustainable development in Delta State and across Africa.

Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort, founded by Dr. Jibunoh, has grown into a notable tourism and cultural destination, offering hospitality services, conservation initiatives, and platforms for community engagement.
