The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed a technical election observation mission to Guinea ahead of the country’s legislative and local government elections scheduled for Sunday, May 31.
The regional bloc said the mission, which began on May 24, will remain in Guinea until June 4 to monitor the electoral process and support efforts aimed at ensuring peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
Guinean voters are expected to elect 147 members of parliament and 342 mayors during the nationwide polls.
According to ECOWAS, the mission is made up of 40 election experts, including officials from electoral management bodies and election observation specialists drawn from member states across the sub-region.
The team is being supported by 10 officials from the ECOWAS Commission, who will coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the mission’s activities in different parts of Guinea.
The deployment underscores ECOWAS’ continued commitment to promoting democratic governance, electoral credibility and political stability across West Africa.
The regional body expressed confidence that the mission would contribute to strengthening public trust in the electoral process and help ensure that the polls are conducted in line with democratic principles and international best practices.
The elections are being closely watched within the sub-region as Guinea prepares to elect new lawmakers and local government leaders in what observers consider a significant test of the country’s democratic process.
