Security agencies have assured residents of Ekiti State of comprehensive protection ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, even as political parties signed a peace accord committing to non-violent conduct before, during and after the poll.
The assurance was given by the Inspector General of Police, represented by IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC, who said adequate security arrangements had been put in place across the state under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
According to him, security operatives have developed detailed deployment plans covering all 16 local government areas and over 2,400 polling units in the state.
“Security personnel and operational assets will be strategically deployed to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officers, observers, and all citizens participating in the democratic process,” he said, adding that officers would remain professional, impartial, and committed to democratic values.
Following the security briefing, governorship candidates and political party chairmen signed the Peace Accord, pledging peaceful campaigns and rejection of electoral violence.
In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by its Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, intensified readiness assessments ahead of the election with visits to Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ado-Ekiti and Ikere Local Government Areas.
Prof. Amupitan also paid a courtesy visit to the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III, where he sought royal blessings for a peaceful and credible election.
During the visit, the INEC Chairman had an emotional moment after reconnecting with one of his former teachers, Mr. Ogunmodimu, describing the encounter as a reminder of the importance of education and mentorship in leadership development.
The electoral body reiterated its commitment to ensuring a free, fair and credible governorship election in Ekiti State.
