The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region, describing the claims as deliberate misinformation aimed at destabilising the country.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said there is “no truth whatsoever” to the allegations being circulated on social media and other platforms.
The statement explained that the purported claim, which referenced an alleged constitutional amendment proposal tagged “Project True Federation,” was fabricated by “desperate politicians and agents of destabilisation” seeking to create tension ahead of the general elections.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no plan whatsoever to send any bill code-named Project True Federation to the National Assembly by December 15 or at any other time,” Onanuga stated.
He stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal process involving extensive legislative scrutiny, approval by a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly, and concurrence by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
According to the Presidency, such a serious process cannot be unilaterally initiated or driven by the executive, as being falsely suggested in the circulating reports.
The statement further noted that President Tinubu remains focused on ongoing economic reforms and efforts to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
“Nigerians should ignore this fake story in its entirety. The President is focused on governance and improving the economy, not divisive political distractions,” the statement added.
The Presidency warned that the spread of fake and divisive news is likely to increase as the country moves closer to the 2027 election cycle, urging citizens to verify information before sharing.
It reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to national unity, constitutional governance, and the continuation of its economic reform agenda.
