I Am Ready to Lead Nigeria” — Atiku Accepts ADC Ticket, Unveils Security, Economy, Education Agenda

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally accepted his emergence as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging to lead Nigeria toward security, economic recovery, and accountable governance ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In an acceptance speech, Atiku expressed gratitude to party members for the mandate, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility to “rescue Nigeria’s democracy” at a critical time in the nation’s history.

“I am truly humbled and ready to lead,” he said, adding that the ADC remains committed to internal democracy, transparency, and a fair electoral process.

The ADC flagbearer criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of undermining democratic institutions, suppressing opposition voices, and presiding over worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

He alleged that opposition figures face intimidation and political pressure, warning that attempts to weaken the ADC or interfere in its affairs would be resisted.

Atiku called for unity within the party, urging former rivals and stakeholders to close ranks and work collectively toward winning the next general elections.

“This is not the time for division. We must unite to rebuild our country and restore hope to Nigerians,” he stated.

Outlining his policy priorities, the former vice president identified security as a top concern, promising to strengthen the military, police, and other agencies through recruitment, improved welfare, modern equipment, and enhanced intelligence coordination.

He also pledged sweeping reforms in education, including free and compulsory primary and secondary schooling, alongside investments in infrastructure, teacher welfare, and skills development to address Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis.

On the economy, Atiku criticised current policies, citing rising poverty and hardship, and promised to implement reforms that would boost investment, create jobs, and address Nigeria’s persistent power supply challenges.

He also raised concerns over government borrowing and the management of funds from fuel subsidy removal, pledging transparency, accountability, and prudent fiscal management.

In the health sector, he promised increased investment in primary healthcare, as well as the development of well-equipped medical facilities to reduce reliance on treatment abroad.

Atiku said his administration, if elected, would be guided by clear policy targets and timelines in line with the ADC manifesto, with a focus on improving citizens’ welfare and strengthening national unity.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to support the ADC’s vision, promising inclusive leadership and a government that prioritises the needs of the people.
