NiDCOM Honours 32 Nigerians Abroad for National Impact

ABUJA — The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has honoured 32 Nigerians living abroad, alongside organisations and distinguished individuals, with the 2026 National Diaspora Merit Awards for their contributions to national development.

The awards were presented at the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja, attended by government officials, diplomats, development partners and members of the diaspora community.

According to a statement issued by NiDCOM’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the awards recognise Nigerians abroad who have excelled globally while contributing to Nigeria’s growth.

Speaking at the event, the Commission’s Secretary, Engr. (Dr.) Sule Yakubu Bassi, said the initiative celebrates Nigerians whose achievements enhance the country’s global image.

“The National Diaspora Merit Awards were established to identify, recognise and celebrate Nigerians in the diaspora who continue to make remarkable impacts in their professions and communities while projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage,” Bassi said.

The 2026 awardees were recognised across sectors including healthcare, education, science and technology, agriculture, entrepreneurship, finance, engineering, media, sports and information technology.

Bassi urged the recipients to sustain their contributions and called on other Nigerians abroad to emulate them, stressing the importance of diaspora involvement in national development.

“No foreigner will develop Nigeria for Nigerians,” he said, encouraging diaspora citizens to invest, share skills and remain engaged in national affairs.

Representing First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, described Nigerians in the diaspora as critical to the country’s growth and stability. She commended NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa for recognising their efforts.

A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of diaspora medical groups supporting Nigeria’s healthcare system through the Diaspora Health Initiative, including associations from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and Germany.

Posthumous awards were also presented to Prof. Bola Awotedu, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani and Ms. Oghenetega Claire Inoni for their contributions to national development.

In addition, Distinguished Service Awards were given to several public figures, including the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, in recognition of their service.

NiDCOM said the awards reaffirm its commitment to strengthening partnerships with Nigerians abroad and promoting their role in driving Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
