ABUJA — Nigeria has praised the peaceful leadership transition within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), describing it as a strong signal of democratic stability in the region, while backing Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as the new chairman.
The Federal Government said the seamless transition underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to democratic values, regional solidarity and collective progress at a time of evolving challenges across West Africa.
The position was outlined in a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
“Nigeria commends the leadership of ECOWAS for this seamless transition, which underscores the bloc’s commitment to democratic principles, regional solidarity, and collective progress,” the statement said.
The government noted that Faye’s emergence comes at a critical period when the sub-region is focused on strengthening peace, security and economic cooperation.
Nigeria reaffirmed its role as a founding member of ECOWAS and a key advocate of regional integration, pledging full support for the new chairman’s agenda.
It also expressed confidence that Faye’s leadership would drive efforts to enhance unity, stability and sustainable development across member states.
In addition, Nigeria signalled readiness to deepen collaboration with Senegal and other ECOWAS countries to boost intra-regional trade, strengthen institutions and promote good governance.
The statement further welcomed the appointment of General Birame Diop as President of the ECOWAS Commission, noting that the new leadership team is well-positioned to tackle shared regional challenges.
