Nigeria, US Align on Policy, Migration, Security Cooperation

ABUJA — Nigeria and the United States have moved to align positions on key policy areas including migration, security cooperation and institutional strengthening following high-level talks in Abuja.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, on Monday received the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Frank Garcia, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where discussions focused on advancing coordination on shared priorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in Press Release No. MFA/PR/2026/136, signed by its Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

Enikanolaiye emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to constructive dialogue on migration and consular matters, noting that ongoing engagements are aimed at improving cooperation frameworks while addressing areas of concern.

He also reiterated Nigeria’s position that current security challenges should not be interpreted as religious persecution or genocide, affirming the government’s commitment to protecting all citizens and strengthening the rule of law.

The minister highlighted efforts to deepen collaboration in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security, alongside broader initiatives to strengthen law enforcement and regional stability in the Gulf of Guinea and Lake Chad Basin.

Garcia described Nigeria as “one of America’s most important strategic partners in Africa,” underscoring the importance of sustained engagement on security, migration and institutional development.

He reaffirmed the United States’ support for Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen governance systems, enhance stability and expand economic opportunities.

Both sides agreed to sustain high-level consultations and deepen cooperation across policy, security and institutional areas, while resolving outstanding issues through dialogue.
