Obasanjo’s Daughter Dumps APC Over ‘Disrespect, Rejection
Former Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect, marginalisation and lack of appreciation for her contributions to the party.
In a resignation letter dated May 31, 2026, and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, the former lawmaker said she could no longer remain in a political environment where she felt unwanted and ignored.
Obasanjo disclosed that before the party settled for a consensus governorship candidate, she had publicly and privately committed herself to respecting the outcome of the process.
However, she alleged that the process failed to reflect the spirit of consensus outlined in the party’s guidelines, claiming that despite being one of the leading aspirants and actively mobilising support across the state, she was neither consulted nor acknowledged when the candidate emerged.
The former senator said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and immediately endorsed the candidate.
She further revealed that the party’s consensus candidate later met with her and her supporters and promised to respond to issues raised during the meeting within a week, but more than two months later, no contact had been made.
According to her, the incident was only one of several examples of what she described as a pattern of rejection and disrespect she had experienced within the APC.
“This is just part of the general treatment I have received from APC of disrespect and rejection as if I was not there making contributions that increased support for the party in Ogun Central and across the state,” she stated.
Announcing her resignation, Obasanjo declared that she was walking away from what she described as an unwelcoming political platform.
“A famous person once said that when disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcome. This is my resignation from the party,” she said.
Despite her exit, she thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the warm reception she received in the party and also appreciated members of the Ogun APC leadership for their support.
Obasanjo represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly between 2007 and 2011.
