Obi Vows Single Term, Says Four Years Enough to Fix Nigeria

ABUJA — The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his pledge to serve only one four-year term if elected, insisting that a single tenure is sufficient to put Nigeria on the path to recovery.

Obi made the declaration during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, where he stressed that his ambition is driven by a desire to fix Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges rather than remain in office.

“I have said it before, and I am saying it again, four years, not a day more,” Obi said, adding that leadership should be measured by results, not duration in power.

The former Anambra State governor argued that what Nigeria needs is not more time but disciplined and accountable leadership capable of implementing the right policies.

He said he would be willing to formalise the commitment if necessary. “I can even sign an affidavit,” he said, noting that Nigerians deserve leaders who keep their promises.

Obi cited rising inflation, unemployment and insecurity as evidence of governance failures, saying millions of Nigerians are struggling due to years of poor policy choices and weak institutions.

He outlined plans to focus on production-driven growth, revive agriculture and manufacturing, and increase investment in education and healthcare, while creating a business environment that attracts both local and foreign investors.

Obi also urged voters to prioritise competence, integrity and performance over ethnic, religious or regional considerations in the 2027 election.

Despite the pledge, questions remain over its enforceability. Nigeria’s Constitution allows a president to seek a second term, leaving the decision to the individual in office.

Some commentators argue that such a promise cannot be legally binding, while others see it as a moral commitment aimed at building public trust.

In a bid to reinforce the pledge, Obi’s running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, said the candidate has signed a written agreement committing to a single tenure.

The one-term promise continues to generate debate as the 2027 campaign gathers momentum, with observers closely watching whether the assurance will convince sceptical voters.
