Over 3,000 Cases of Gender-Based Violence Reported in FCT Within 100 Days

In a concerning revelation, it has been reported that a staggering 3,072 cases of gender-based violence have been documented in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with an alarming 2,000 cases emerging within the first 100 days of Mrs. Adebayo Benjamins-Laniyi’s tenure as the Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.

During an event at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, marking her 100 days in office, Benjamins-Laniyi attributed the surge in reported cases to the renewed confidence residents now have in the new authorities overseeing the FCT Administration (FCTA). She expressed unwavering determination to “leave no woman behind” and “leave no adolescent behind,” underscoring her commitment to inclusive policies, politics, and personal interactions.

Notably, the Secretary highlighted that men have also come forward to report abuses against them, indicating a broadening scope of reported cases. Plans were unveiled to temporarily suspend cases of adoption, and the revival of the defunct FCT female football team, FCT Queens, is on the agenda.

Since assuming office on October 24, 2023, Benjamins-Laniyi has actively engaged in stakeholder consultations with key figures such as the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, and the Women Affairs Ministry. The Secretariat, within the first 100 days, conducted gender-based violence sensitization programs for wives of traditional rulers and Area Council chairmen in the FCT. Additionally, the Secretariat celebrated the 2023 UN Women 16 days of advocacy against GBV in the FCT and hosted the First Lady’s Renewal Hope Humanitarian Programme for the aged.

Affirming her commitment to a comprehensive approach, Benjamins-Laniyi toured all facilities under her office, including various homes, vocational and empowerment centers, and projects aimed at empowering women in the FCT.

This active engagement and commitment by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat underline a dedicated effort to address and combat gender-based violence, creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
