The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that it is a “dead party,” insisting that fresh defections, electoral victories and growing nationwide support are clear signs of its political resurgence.
In a statement on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the opposition party declared that it remains “alive, healthy and growing stronger,” stressing that its 27-year history is proof of its resilience despite political challenges.
The PDP said recent developments, including the reported decision of Iyabo Obasanjo to identify with the party, the reported entry of Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, victories in the Adamawa State local government elections and the Rivers State Senate bye-election, as well as the influx of political heavyweights from Katsina, Jigawa, Imo, Oyo and other states, demonstrate that the party is regaining strength across the country.
According to the party, these developments completely contradict claims that it has lost relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The PDP described Akpabio’s comments as “political wishful thinking,” insisting that the reality on the ground points to a party that is steadily rebuilding and attracting wider public support.
The opposition also cited a recently commissioned Federal Government project in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that it was supervised by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, whom it described as a distinguished PDP member serving in the current administration.
The party argued that it was contradictory for the ruling party to celebrate projects executed under a PDP member while simultaneously declaring the party politically irrelevant.
It further alleged that the increasing criticism from the ruling party reflects growing concern over the PDP’s renewed momentum and expanding national appeal.
Expressing confidence ahead of future elections, the PDP said Nigerians would once again entrust it with the responsibility of governing the country, promising purposeful, inclusive and people-oriented leadership.
The party also applauded Wike’s performance as FCT Minister, describing it as another demonstration of the competence and leadership tradition associated with the PDP.
Reaffirming its confidence, the party declared that it remains “a beautiful bride on hot demand” and is fully prepared to mount a strong challenge in future elections.
