Abuja, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Nigerian youths and women to take a more active role in politics ahead of the 2027 elections, urging them to reject violence and embrace constructive participation.
Speaking at a reception in Abuja to honour the party’s new National Chairman, AbdulRahman Mohammed, party leaders stressed that inclusiveness would be central to the PDP’s future and electoral prospects.
Mohammed, described by party officials as the youngest chairman in the party’s history, said young Nigerians must move beyond political thuggery and engage meaningfully in shaping the country’s direction.
“I want to use this opportunity to call the attention of the teeming youths and women in our dear nation. It’s not about political thuggery. It’s about doing the needful during the election and after the election,” he said.
He added that the party would prioritise creating opportunities for young people to be heard and included in decision-making. “The teeming youths are in need of inclusiveness… and by God’s grace, we are going to provide that, so that each and every one of us will have peace, so that our tomorrow will be better,” he said.
Party unity and renewed momentum
Also speaking, PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, said the party was experiencing renewed energy, particularly within its youth wing.
“This is the time PDP has actually got a national youth leader,” he said, noting that the youth structure had become more active and unified in recent months.
He dismissed suggestions of internal divisions, insisting, “There is only one PDP in Nigeria… PDP is not only alive, but stronger.”
The National Youth Leader, Ambassador Ibrahim Bala-Aboki, said young Nigerians were ready to play a decisive role in the party’s future and the country’s politics.
“The youth are ready… we are even ready to make sure we reclaim our mandate,” he said, expressing confidence in the party’s chances in 2027.
Award presentation and 2027 outlook
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Grand Commander of PDP Youth Award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, received on his behalf by a party official.
Party stakeholders said the gathering reflected growing unity within the PDP and signalled preparations for a stronger showing in the next general elections.
Leaders at the event expressed optimism that increased youth participation and mobilisation would translate into electoral gains, including governorship, legislative and other key positions in 2027.
