CBN wins Central Bank of the Year as Cardoso dedicates award to staff, reforms

Abuja/London – Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has formally received the Central Bank of the Year Award, dedicating the recognition to the institution’s staff and ongoing reform efforts aimed at stabilising Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking at the Central Banking Awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Cardoso said the honour reflected the collective work of the Bank rather than any individual achievement.

“I accept this award on behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said. “Above all, it belongs to the many dedicated professionals who serve our institution with integrity, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”

The award, presented by Central Banking Publications, comes at a time when Nigeria’s monetary authorities are implementing key reforms to address economic challenges, including inflationary pressures and foreign exchange market instability.

Cardoso noted that central banks globally have faced difficult conditions in recent years, with Nigeria navigating its own economic headwinds. He highlighted measures taken by the CBN, including foreign exchange reforms and investments in digital and financial infrastructure to support long-term growth.

He also pointed to milestones such as Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list and the completion of the banking sector recapitalisation exercise as evidence of progress.

According to the CBN governor, the Bank’s reform agenda is focused on restoring confidence, strengthening institutional resilience, and reinforcing policy credibility.

“We receive this recognition with humility,” Cardoso said. “We see it not as a destination, but as encouragement to continue the important work ahead.”

He added that the progress recorded so far has been supported by the Federal Government, market participants, development partners, and the resilience of Nigerians.

The recognition marks a significant moment for the Central Bank of Nigeria as it continues efforts to stabilise the financial system and support economic recovery.
