Abuja — The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has assured Nigerians of a credible, transparent and fair process in its upcoming national convention, as the screening of aspirants commences.
National Chairman of the SDP, Professor Sadiq Gombe, made this pledge on Wednesday while addressing party members at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The national convention of the party is scheduled to hold on May 9, 2026, in Bauchi State.
Professor Gombe disclosed that the party has constituted over four committees and sub-committees, including the Screening Committee, Electoral Committee and Convention Committee, to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.

He stated that the screening of aspirants for various elective positions — including the presidency, governorship, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly — is taking place at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, which serves as its registered office with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The party is preparing to field candidates in constituencies nationwide,” Gombe said, adding that the process is part of the SDP’s strategy for the forthcoming general elections.
He urged members of the screening committee to discharge their duties with fairness, diligence and transparency.
“We are committed to ensuring that the process is conducted in line with laid-down guidelines and democratic principles,” the SDP chairman declared.
Gombe also appealed to aspirants and party members to remain peaceful and comply with all rules guiding the exercise, expressing confidence that the convention would strengthen internal democracy and unity within the party.
Chairman of the Screening Committee, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar Lima (retd.), assured that the committee would strictly adhere to the party’s guidelines and established criteria in assessing aspirants.
He warned that any aspirant who fails to meet the stipulated requirements would not be cleared to contest.
The development signals the SDP’s readiness to participate actively in the 2027 general elections with a credible pool of candidates.
