Afrobeats musician Seun Kuti and his wife, Yetunde Kuti, have sparked widespread conversation after declaring that infidelity would not end their marriage. The couple made the revelation during a Valentine’s edition of the TVC program “Your View,” where they discussed their relationship and deal-breakers.
Yetunde, who was formerly Seun’s backup dancer, made her stance clear: “There is nothing my husband is going to do that would make me leave him. Even if he cheats on me I won’t leave him. I am not going to leave my husband because he cheated on me. Nah, that can’t happen.”
When the host asked Seun if he would leave Yetunde if she cheated, he responded: “No. What has that got to do with anything?” He elaborated on his philosophy: “We don’t believe in cheating. What is cheating? Love is not ownership.”
Seun further grounded his perspective in African tradition, stating: “African men knew this 500 years ago, 300 years ago, 200 years ago. But today we African men are forming as if we do not know what is going on. In Africa, only your sister’s children inherit from you. Because they are the only ones you are sure are your blood.”
The couple, who tied the knot in October 2020, have a daughter named Ifafunmike Adara Anikulapo-Kuti, born in 2013. Yetunde has previously spoken about the challenges of marrying into the Kuti family, noting that her family feared her life would end if she married Seun.
The revelation drew criticism from fellow artist Portable, who argued that a man whose wife cheats is not “responsible”. Despite the backlash, the couple remains firm in their commitment, challenging conventional views on marriage and fidelity.
